Thaipusam is a day of reckoning for the Hindus. It is a festival held during the full moon of the Hindu Calendar in tribute of Hindu Deity Lord Subramaniam aka Lord Murugan honored for slaying 3 evil demons for the sake of humanity. It is said that his mother Parvati gave him the invulnerable “vel” – a steel spear to rid the evil demons. It is also a day for devotees to fulfil their vows. Ladies must be properly attired to enter the temple - knees and shoulders to be covered. 5am Complimentary pick up from your hotel within Kuala Lumpur and depart for the iconic Batu Caves. Highlights of the festival • Watch first hand the piercing of steel skewers and hooks into the fragile cheeks, tongue, eyebrows, backs of the devotee. Viewer discretion is cautioned. • At the riverside it’s a hive of activities. Hindu Priests chanting devotional prayers and songs to the beat of heavy drums calling for divine intervention of the cleansed devotees who had been in 40 days abstinence of all vices. • Mesmerizing dances by devotees and their followers in honor of Deity Lord Subramaniam for vows fulfilled. You can partake in the dancing too. • Impressive and colorful “KAVADIS” - an elaborate ornate frame well decorated with Statue of their Deity is carried on their shoulders with much singing to heavy drum beats and rigorous dancing. Yes.. It’s a blast of a festival. • Devotees dashing through the crowd up the 272 steps barefooted to surrender to his Lord. Gusts will be allowed a free and easy mingle with the crowd for more photo shoots. 11 am Reassemble at starting point and depart for a Banana Leaf Lunch (eat with fingers). Drop off at your hotel by 1 pm. End of program.
