They are revered as cultural and religious icons. Due to deforestation and illegal wildlife trafficking, they have become an endangered species. Hence the setup of the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary in 1989 for continuous conservation, protection, public awareness and education. The center uses game darts to knock out rogue elephants. Orphaned elephants are also saved and later released into bigger and safer jungle reserves. Feeding of the elephants is allowed and photo shoots aplenty. Visit the iconic Batu Caves. Climb 272 steps into the temple of Hindu Deity honored during Thaipusam. Ladies to be well attired – knees and shoulders to be covered. Devotees give thanks for vows fulfilled. Take a rural drive to Kuala Selangor – a fishing village and to Bukit Melawati that houses an old abandoned fort, lighthouse, a poisoned well, and 3 Royal graves of sultans. It is home also of the SILVERED LEAF MONKEYS – a very graceful and adorable primate that forage for food at the hills. Feeding is allowed and you will experience an attachment with the monkeys. They will clamber all over you if you have food in your hands. Photo shoots aplenty. After a frolicking time with the monkeys, adjourn to a riverside restaurant for a sumptuous seafood dinner. Malaysia boasts of the largest Fireflies colony in the world. FIREFLIES are fascinating lighting bugs. They flash synchronously and produce a biochemical reaction on their light organs situated on their bottoms. Catch a boat for an exhilarating ride at dusk to watch dazzling fireflies resting, feeding and making love daily – a mating ritual. A fascinating sight to behold as the boatman negotiates among the mangrove trees. Silence to prevail. Return transfer to Kuala Lumpur arriving approx. 9 pm.
